CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY – INTERIM STATEMENT OF INTENT  

Hampton-in-Arden Parish Council supports the statement of intent to protect the environment agreed on 8th October 2019 by Members of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. We recognise the gravity of the climate change emergency and will seek to minimise the environmental impacts of our own activities and will contribute to the improvement of the wider environment through local action.  

The Parish Council has a key role to play in supporting climate change mitigation activities and has adopted this Interim Statement of Intent to help focus on those ends. The high-level objectives are set out below. More detailed actions and objectives will be developed to support and drive these objectives. 

  • Objective 1 – Community Engagement – We will engage with and support the community, empowering it to take the actions required to become carbon neutral by 2030.  
  • Objective 2 – Reduced Consumption and Waste – We will support and promote initiatives that seek to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and will continue efforts to reduce our own consumption and waste.  
  • Objective 3 – Enhancement of Green Space – We will work to conserve and enhance the natural environment, making space for nature and wildlife through the defence, restoration and creation of valued habitats, biodiversity, and green spaces, whilst protecting key landscape features.  
  • Objective 4 – Ensuring environmentally sensitive development. We will seek to ensure that plans for new construction, alterations, and extensions at least conserve and ideally enhance the natural habitat and the mitigation of climate change. 
  • Objective 5 – Encouragement of environmentally friendly travel – We will work to help reduce dependency on fossil fuels for travel, improve safety and accessibility of cycling and pedestrian routes, and seek improvements in public transport.   
  • Objective 6 – Reduced environmental impact of Local Businesses – We will encourage the use of local services & products and work with local businesses to help them to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.  
  • Objective 7 – Creation of a Healthier and More Resilient Community – We will promote and encourage initiatives which help build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community.
