M42 junction 6 improvement scheme update

We’re writing to give you an update on the construction of the new A4545 link road between Clock Interchange and the new M42 junction 5a, which is part of our upgrade to the M42 at junction 6.

What’s happening next?

We’re now planning to demolish the old Solihull Road bridge in May. These activities will allow us to continue our work on the new A4545 link road between Clock Interchange and this new junction, part of our upgrade scheme on the M42 at junction 6. To complete this bridge demolition safely we’ll need to fully close the M42 in both directions between junction 5 and junction 6 from 22:00 on Friday 5 May to 05:00 on Monday 8 May 2023.

To help you spread awareness of this within your own organisations and stakeholders, I have attached some materials to distribute that you may find useful.

Why is this road closure needed?

The closure of the M42 is required to enable the safe demolition of the existing Solihull Road Bridge. The bridge is being demolished by breaking out the concrete deck using excavators situated on the M42 carriageway. This is a crucial step to enable the opening of the new Solihull Road bridge by the end of July. To reduce the amount of traffic travelling through the area during the closure, we’ll be placing signs along the motorway to advise of possible delays.
