7.       Mason Foundation – The Community Mile

The Mason Foundation was founded in 2017, by entrepreneur and philanthropist Stephen Mason, with the single mission of supporting communities to become happier, healthier, and more active. Following the devastating long-term impact of the pandemic, The Community Mile was launched in 2021 to help those communities most in need.

The Community Mile is a 6-month wellbeing programme delivered in partnership with grass roots organisations, to support vulnerable communities. We support organisations to deliver a ‘Mile’ within their setting, for their specific community.  The Community Mile provides the first, important step to changing behaviours for many people, who otherwise will remain inactive for the rest of their lives. The programme plays a fundamental part in addressing the huge inequalities faced by so many, unlocking the advantages of physical activity for everyone through removing barriers for those most disadvantaged groups. A Mile can be a structured or unstructured route, or simply 15 minutes of activity #YourMileYourWay. Whether that’s walking, rolling, arm-chair exercises, or perhaps a sensory experience, we embed ‘The Mile’ in your community so that it is inclusive and accessible for all.

We achieve this through supporting and empowering local community-based organisations to set up, deliver and do ‘Their Mile, Their Way’ – in the community, for the community, by the community. There isn’t a more powerful role model than the person that lives and understand the everyday challenges and can relate first-hand to how to overcome them.

The 6-month programme costs £6,000 however if the cost is a barrier, please let me know as we will support organisations with cost where we can. Attached are the Community Mile Flyer and FAQ’s which contain more information.

If any community organisations are interested or would like to ask any questions, please drop Hayley Noel an email on Hayley.noel@masonfoundation.co.uk

1.       Information about Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse reaches every corner of our society. It is a complex issue which sadly affects many individuals and families. While anyone can and are affected, it is overwhelming experienced by women, and perpetrated by males. It can happen to anyone, regardless of status, address, class, culture of wealth.

COVID-19 led to a spotlight on domestic abuse, and while COVID-19 does not cause domestic abuse, there was a visible escalation in reports of domestic abuse. In April 2021, the United Kingdom introduced the first ever legislation in the form of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. The Act aims to tackle domestic abuse, through improving awareness and understanding, so that we can improve how we can support those who are subjected to domestic abuse, and strengthen how we respond to those who perpetrate it.

One way we can do this, is by asking agencies and individuals who have contact with residents to be alert to the issue, and to feel more confident in being able to spot the signs and to respond in a safe way. To help with this, we have produced a short guidance that is attached (see ’guidance for people working with the community members’). Please share this across your networks.

4.       ‘Conversation Culture’ event

Arts and Culture play a vital role in making Solihull a prosperous, healthy and attractive place to live and in bringing people together provides a sense of vitality and belonging. The council recognise that there is more that they can do to strengthen the cultural infrastructure in Solihull, and they’re keen to develop an ongoing dialogue with local practitioners and organisations. They are therefore issuing an open invitation to a first ‘Conversation Culture’ forum as a space to discuss the opportunities and challenges as we move out of the pandemic.During the evening there will be an opportunity to: hear about the results of a cultural audit of Solihull, carried out by Sampad; hear about the council’s cultural programming over the next year, particularly in relation to the Commonwealth Games; discuss what works well and what could be improved in the cultural sphere in Solihull, and suggest how the council can support you.

The council want to reach and engage with individuals and organisations from the arts, heritage and culture sector no matter how big or small, regardless of whether they are relatively new or well-established. They want representation from all disciplines to achieve some rich feedback so please pass this invite on to those in your networks who they may not have yet had the opportunity to make contact with.
